Ailene Voisin, The Sacramento Bee; www.sacbee.com
With a bachelor’s in poly sci from UNLV and a law degree from the University of San Diego, Ailene Voisin had a choice: law or journalism. We know how this story ends. “Journalism has always really been more of a passion than a job,” says Voisin, who has traveled throughout the world and interviewed the likes of Muhammad Ali, Magic Johnson, Larry Byrd and Billy Jean King. Other career highlights include covering the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona (“It was less commercialized then,” she says) and the 2004 games in Greece. (“Athens is the birthplace of the Olympics. The history is pretty overpowering. Plus, I love Greece.”) “I also enjoyed going over to Serbia and interviewing Vlade [Divac] and Peja [Stojakovic],” she says. So who does Voisin, who’s written about sports for several newspapers including the Atlanta Journal-Constitution before coming to the Bee 11 years ago, root for? “We root for the most compelling stories,” she says.
