Wine(s) of the Week: Delightful Bubblies from Mumm Napa and Francis Ford Coppola Winery

‘Tis the season for sparkling wine – that vibrant, bubbly beverage that brightens holiday parties and helps us celebrate everything that’s important about this cheery season. Here’s two widely available and fabulous sparkling wines to add to your grocery list this month:

Mumm Napa Brut Rosé

This pretty blush-pink sparkling wine offers a plummy-strawberry, floral bouquet, leading you enticingly into the wine’s lush flavors of strawberry, red raspberry and rich yeastiness. Nicely balanced by a subtle citrusy snap and a hint of vanilla, this fruity and approachable wine has bright acidity and lots of teeny, fizzy bubbles. It’s a delightful holiday quaff.

Francis Ford Coppola Winery 2011 Sofia Blanc de Blancs

I’m a sucker for the packaging on this beautiful bottle of sparkling wine – it comes wrapped in a lovely pink cellophane cover which really makes it stand out on the grocery store shelf. But beyond its attractive packaging, this delicate, perfumey Blanc de Blancs is a real treat to drink – you’ll be captivated by its crisp, honeyed, apple-pear flavors and fragrance of ripe quinces and honeysuckle. Light and beguiling, with a subdued bubbliness, it’s a sparkling wine best savored by itself – perhaps as a pre-meal aperitif.
