I’ve been a Zinfandel fan for years, and am always happy to discover another tasty version of this popular wine. Story Winery in Plymouth is well-known for its excellent Zinfandels (it also happens to be a fabulous spot in which to have a picnic – I encourage you to visit), and I recently relished a bottle of Story’s 2009 Picnic Hill Vineyard Zinfandel. This elegant, spicy, food-friendly red is unfined and unfiltered, crafted from grapes picked in a heritage vineyard that was planted in the late 1890’s. I liked the wine’s restraint – it’s not a big, powerful monster like some old-vine Zins – but it definitely has a lively personality, offering lots of brambly, berry-plummy flavors with nuances of cedar, tobacco and licorice. This is a great wine for a barbecue; or serve it with a hearty bowl of cioppino or chili, lasagna, grilled Italian sausages or pizza.
