One of the very best things about a Sacramento summer is the wild blackberries that grow throughout our region. Sweet, tart, and intensely flavored, they are fabulous eaten by the handful or incorporated into pies, cobblers, muffins, or even fresh ice cream. It takes some effort (and patience) to pick them, as the vines are covered with thorns (and your hands are bound to turn purple), but this lovely fruit is well worth the effort. Wild blackberries are ripe now, but their season is short – and if we get some really hot days, they’ll dry up and lose their appeal. So take advantage of these amazing, cooler summer days and take the family out for some blackberry picking while the fruit is still available (and delicious).
