Weekend Suggestions for Mom

1093

Looking for something interesting to do this weekend with Mom? Here’s three ideas:

Take her on a Picnic
The weather will be lovely! Pull your picnic basket (or backpack) out of the closet and head to your local deli for some outdoor comestibles (a few of my favorites are Corti Brothers in Sacramento; Better Foods Deli in Roseville; and Sam’s Kosher Style Restaurant & Delicatessen in Fair Oaks). Great places for a beautiful picnic include Griffith Quarry in Penryn, a stunning historical landmark with pretty hiking trails (on the corner of Taylor Road and Rock Springs Road); and Effie Yeaw Nature Center, which offers not only great picknicking, but a 77-acre nature preserve with interpretive trails and a fascinating collection of animals to observe (in Ancil Hoffman County Park, 2850 San Lorenzo Way, Carmichael).

Cook her Dinner
A home cooked meal is far more personal than taking mom to a restaurant. If you want to showcase some local talent, try Mai Pham’s vibrant new cookbook, The Flavors of Asia (recipes range from Korean lettuce wraps with spicy beef to Kabocha squash with red beans). Biba Caggiano has also published a number of fabulous cookbooks. One of her best is Trattoria Cooking – mom will love her recipe for Pollo alla Cacciatora (chicken “hunter-style”).

Take her to Visit a Farm
Did you know we’re surrounded by farm trails? A farm trail is an organization of local farms (usually grouped by counties) that encourage visitors. A trail map can also include things like wineries, bed and breakfasts, corn mazes, wildlife viewing opportunities and farm and food festivals. Farm visits provide a unique opportunity to interact with local growers, and a chance to connect with, and appreciate, the gorgeous agricultural environment that surrounds us.
