Most of us are reveling in the gorgeous warm weather after a long, rainy winter. Vegetable seeds and baby plants are flying off the shelves of nurseries as we eagerly shift our attention to the preparation of a backyard vegetable garden. But it will be months yet until we can harvest our produce. If you have a hankering for intensely-flavored, sweet, and ripe tomatoes – the kind you pluck off your vines in mid-August – try visiting the Tomato Man at the Sunday downtown farmer’s market. The Tomato Man grows his tomatoes in a hot house, and they burst with that sun-kissed, full flavor that only a truly ripe tomato can possess. I’ve purchased tomatoes from him over the past several months, and there’s nothing like biting into a luscious, sweet, run-down-your-arms-juicy tomato while the cold rain pours outside.
You’ll find the Tomato Man on Sundays at the Certified Farmers Market at the state parking lot, 8th and W Streets (under the freeway), from 8am – noon.
