Frito-Lay, maker of Sun Chips, is coming under fire for its new compostable chip bag. Put simply, the bag is loud. According to an Aug. 18 story in The Wall Street Journal, the Sun Chips bag makes a 95-decibel sound when you touch it. (A similar bag of Tostitos Scoops chips measured only 77 decibels.) An Air Force pilot who tested the loudness of the bags using a RadioShack sound meter told The Journal the Sun Chips package is louder “than the cockpit of my jet.” There’s now a Facebook group, with close to 30,000 fans, called “SORRY BUT I CAN’T HEAR YOU OVER THIS SUN CHIPS BAG.” I went to my neighborhood Safeway to conduct a little field test. First I grabbed a bag of Ruffles, followed a bag of Sun Chips. Yes, indeed, the Sun Chip bag is much louder. Want to hear for yourself? Check out my video.
