Redesigning the Hot Dog?

The American Academy of Pediatrics set off a small-scale furor earlier this week when it called for a redesign of the hot dog, warning that it poses a choking hazard for kids. I called Mike Brown, owner of Capitol Dawg, to get his reaction. “The hot dog has already been redesigned,” Brown joked. “It’s called bologna.” Seriously, he said, the hot dog is never going to change. “What would you do? Make it in the shape of a lifesaver?” His answer to those who worry about the dangers of feeding tube steak to a kid: Be a conscientious parent and cut it up. “We have knives and forks for that. We’ll even do it for you if you ask.”
