When local baker Kira O’Donnell closed her Real Pie Company in early 2008, she left a lot of disappointed pie lovers in the lurch. Well, she’s back. O’Donnell (who writes about food for Sacramento magazine) is now making and selling pies one day a week out of Corti Brothers, the East Sac specialty grocer. Her all-butter-crust, seasonal-fruit pies are available by reservation only. O’Donnell sends out an e-mail announcing the week’s flavors. (This week, she’s making Meyer lemon/blood orange macaroon pie and toasted almond/ginger/date tart.) The pies cost $18 to $20 and are available for pickup at Corti after 2 p.m. Friday. O’Donnell says she’s thrilled to be baking again. “I missed my pie shop,” she says. “It’s a lot of work, but I’m happy to be back in the kitchen.” Her former customers are happy, too. One has driven down from Newcastle three weeks running to pick up pies. O’Donnell is mulling over the idea of creating a “pie carpool” for far-flung pie lovers.
