Readers on Their Favorite Local Dives

Sacramentans sure do love their dives. Last week, after I wrote about Guy Fieri coming to town to tape his Food Network show “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” I received an avalanche of divey restaurant suggestions from readers. J.P. Khoury, a local chef, said Fieri has to go to Roxie Deli & Grocery in East Sac: “Not only do the sandwiches rock, but he’s got a smoker.” Reader David Rasul wrote: “Guy should go to Luigi’s Pizza on Stockton Blvd. Best pizza in Sacramento!” Several readers nominated the weirdly named burger joint Nationwide Freezer Meats. “The small steak sandwich or the burger are great,” wrote one. Other reader faves: Awful Annie’s in Auburn, Better Foods Deli in Roseville, Uptown Cafe on Del Paso Boulevard, King’s Chinese Restaurant in West Sac, Weiner Works on Madison Avenue, and Los Jarritos, Felipe’s, Eggies and Bud’s Buffet, all in Sacramento. We got so much feedback on this subject, we’ve decided to do a story on the best local diners, drive-ins and dives for the October issue of Sacramento magazine. Stay tuned …
