Our own Pru Mendez, owner of Tucos Wine Market and Cafe in Davis, will do a free cooking demonstration tomorrow (Saturday, July 11) at the Ferry Plaza Marketplace in San Francisco.
At 11 a.m., he’ll demonstrate how to prepare a three-course lunch using ingredients from the farmers market. On the menu: a market salad, paella and panna cotta with fruit compote. He called them “workhorse recipes that allow you to plug in whatever you find at the market.”
Originally, Mendez had hoped to demonstrate campfire cooking, using a wheelbarrow lined with bricks and filled with flaming hardwood. “It was going to be mind-blowing.” But he couldn’t get permission to fire up his homemade grill outside the Ferry Building, which attracts hundreds of tourists, local shoppers and farmers on a Saturday morning. “San Francisco won’t allow you to use anything but a gas grill,” he said. “I can’t fight that battle.”
This is Mendez’s first time cooking at the Ferry Plaza, located on the Embarcadero at 1 Ferry Building. “It’s a dream come true to be invited to cook there,” he said.
