I finally got around to seeing Julie and Julia over the weekend—and was completely enchanted. Meryl Streep portrays Julia Child as a big-hearted, funny, life-embracing gal. If Streep doesn’t get an Oscar nom, I’ll make Julia’s boneless duck en croûte.
I also liked Amy Adams as the self-absorbed blogger Julie Powell, who spent a year preparing all 524 recipes from Julia’s masterpiece, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. How Powell went to work every day, then came home at night to make things like calves’ foot aspic and lobster Thermidor, I’ll never know.
By the way, The New York Times has an interesting story today about how the movie has made Mastering the Art of French Cooking, published in 1961, a bestseller for the first time ever. Wouldn’t Julia be pleased?
