It’s Never Too Cold for Good Ice Cream: Gunther’s Chocolate-Dipped Cone

1937

Ice cream isn’t the first thing we think about on toe-chilling winter afternoons, but my kids recently reminded me that the frozen treat tastes just as good in January as it does in June. So we headed out to Gunther’s for a two-scoop, chocolate-dipped cone. Decadent and delicious, it turned out to be the highlight of our day.

Established in 1940, Gunther’s is a beloved Sacramento institution that offers an array of house-crafted ice creams, whose flavors range from strawberry cheesecake and peppermint stick to lemon custard and pistachio nut. In addition to its cones, the friendly shop also sells other fountain sweets like floats, sundaes, fruit freezes and milkshakes; and offers a fun lineup of handmade novelty items such as clown cones, mud pie on a stick, and chocolate covered bananas.
