Hankering for some really good barbecue this week, I made my way to Folsom’s BBQ Express, one of my favorite places in the region for fabulous, smoky tri-tip and pork ribs. After ordering platefuls of meat to take home to my family, I discovered that owner Mike Taylor had decided – just hours before – to close BBQ Express. It would be his final day of business. Though he’d been cogitating on it for a while, the day’s decision was spontaneous, and final.
Taylor, a former NFL player and long-time employee of Federal Express, has owned the shop (his third career) for 17 years. He hoped one of his children might be interested in the business and take it over for him, but that hasn’t turned out to be the case. So he’s throwing in his oven mitts for a well-deserved retirement, though he admits to some sadness mingled in with his excitement for the future.
I was very grateful to have had the chance to savor Taylor’s terrific barbecue one last time before the shop was gone. Good luck to you, Mike – The Folsom food community is sure to miss your wonderful little business.
