Residents of the Arden Arcade neighborhood now have a sophisticated new eatery to brag about. I recently visited Plan B, located in the quirky Arden Town Center at Fair Oaks Boulevard and Watt Avenue, and had a knockout meal. The handsome interior features dark wood paneling and interesting, rustic brick walls from which tufty, grassy plants comically erupt; and the chocolate brown ceiling and elegant white drapes framing the door made me feel as if I was sitting in a glamorous cave. The French-inspired menu offers a number of intriguing small plates, including the kitchen’s “stix,” which are cute mini-skewers (try the popular tiger prawn and pancetta; or the rib-eye version, served with a spicy pepper relish). I loved the boldly flavored, beautiful butter lettuce salad, which arrived at the table arranged on the plate like a ruffly green rose and was sprinkled with roasted walnuts, chunks of robust Roquefort cheese and tart sun-dried cherries; and the super-indulgent Plan B burger (topped with wild mushrooms, ham and béarnaise sauce) was one of the best I’ve tried in the region. And if you like mussels, you’re in luck – the kitchen serves them six different ways (don’t miss the “Nantaise” version, with butter, shallots and warm crème fraiche).
