I had a chance recently to check out the new downtown Burgers and Brew, one of several food establishments (including Magpie Caterers Market & Café and Shady Lady Saloon) that have helped to revitalize the corner of 14th and R Street. The quirky space feels (and looks) like a pub, with a bar located at the rear of the space (over which dangles a curious glass display case filled with beer bottles), interesting wood-paneled and brick walls, and fantastical, abstract artwork into which one might get lost after guzzling a couple of the establishment’s excellent brews. All that aside, come for the burgers – they’re first-rate. Selections range from the greasy-but-satisfying mushroom and onion cheeseburger and the chili cheeseburger (don’t plan to kiss – or breathe on – anyone after you eat it) to vegetarian-friendly items such as the smoked tofu burger (on a wheat bun, of course) and the briskly-selling portobello mushroom burger with roasted red pepper mayonnaise. Burgers and Brew also serves up a fine list of sandwiches and hot dogs, but I’ve had more success – at both the Sacramento and Davis locations – with the burgers. The establishment offers an outdoor eating area, and very generous hours for hungry night owls – it’s open ‘till 12am Sunday through Wednesday, and 3am Thursday through Saturday.
