Cupcake shops have sprouted like mushrooms around the region over the past several years. And while many of them are designed for a quick grab ‘n go, I discovered a beautiful little cupcake shop in Folsom that encourages its customers to stop and linger for a while. Congenial Rockin’ Cupcake Café on East Bidwell Street, whose luscious cupcakes are named after popular songs, has a small dining area where visitors can settle in with a fresh-baked sweet and a hot cup of coffee – the perfect spot for a mid-day break. And on Friday nights, owner Lynn Armitage features local musicians to entertain her cupcake-eating guests.
Armitage spent a year working on her recipes before opening the shop, and her cupcakes are baked totally from scratch on the premises. They are the tastiest cupcakes I’ve tried in a long time – don’t miss the “So Happy Together,” plush chocolate cake filled with a creamy peanut butter mousse, dipped in dark chocolate ganache and embellished with chopped peanuts; or the marvelous “Coconut Cabana,” whose vanilla cake base is crowned with a wonderful coconut buttercream swirl.
