“Satori” is a Japanese word meaning sudden awakening or enlightenment. For Dave Kovar’s students, it means to be “in the moment . . . at your best.” And Kovar has a lot of students. The business he started in 1978 has grown to include nine Sacramento-area locations for young and old alike. The Mini Samurai Program suits children ages 3 and 4. SatoriFit, for adults, imparts fitness, nutrition and self-protection strategies. Because martial arts may seem intimidating to first-timers, the academy offers a free private lesson. Or, if you’re more inclined to look before you leap, the academy’s demonstration team, Red and Black Attack, can be spotted at fairs, college sporting events and the occasional Sacramento Kings basketball game.
