Chowing down during a concert or theatrical production is common practice: Think Harrah’s legendary showroom in Tahoe, or Harlow’s and Suspects Dinner Theatre here in Sac. But table service during a movie? That’s a new one.

At Studio Movie Grill, the new nine-screen movie theater in Rocklin, patrons sit in comfy lounge seats and watch first-run films while ordering from a tempting menu of entrees, starters and drinks—yep, adult beverages, too—simply by pushing a little red service button.

I recently visited the uber-modern multiplex—the first of its kind in our region, and part of a national franchise—and was wowed by its plush, classy look and friendly service. But most of all—I’ll admit it—I loved the self-indulgence factor. As soon as I took my cushy seat and glanced at the menu, the Pineapple Crush, a vodka-spiked drink with lemon-lime soda, pineapple juice and OJ, called to me. Soon enough, I was ordering lunch, a California burger with guacamole, pepper jack cheese, chipotle mayo and pico de gallo. It was delivered so quickly I thought it couldn’t possibly be my order. But, impressively enough, it was.

A few other takeaways:

  • Seating is assigned. Unlike standard movie theaters, this one offers assigned seating—largely, I assume, so the servers can find you. For this reason (and also to avoid waiting in line), purchasing tickets in advance is advisable.
  • Service is continuous. At any point before or during the movie, a push of the button (on the tray/table attached to each seat) sends a signal to your server, who will show up immediately, if my experience was typical.
  • Service isn’t distracting. The servers are pretty stealthy, ducking in and out quietly and without intruding on moviegoers’ sight lines.
  • Prices are reasonable. At least in my book: Most mains (burgers, pizzas, salads, ribs, more) run $9.50 to $14, and movie tickets are $6 to $9.

In a nutshell, it’s fun. Go!
