Spotlight: Janis Stevens

Sacramento actor Janis Stevens has a knack for portraying famous women, and this month brings another late luminary alive: opera diva Maria Callas.
Master Class runs March 11 to April 10 at Capital Stage aboard the Delta King. After playing the lead in the Tony Award-winning show this past fall for Sonora’s Sierra Repertory Theatre, she’s delighted with the Capital Stage reprisal.
“The play goes way beyond the personal life of Maria Callas,†Stevens explains of the late Greek soprano. “It speaks to the soul of the performing artist, the dedication it takes.â€
Callas is one of several interesting women Stevens has played. She was nominated for a 2006 Drama Desk award for her off-Broadway portrayal of Vivien Leigh and won a local Elly Award for her 2006 role in Becoming Julia Morgan. This winter, she again took up the role of the famed American architect at the Berkeley City Club.
“Everything I’m doing, I also have an emotional and an artistic desire to do,†Stevens says. “I feel really lucky, but I’ve worked really, really hard to get here.â€
