Title: “Other People”

Starring: Jesse Plemons (“Breaking Bad”), Molly Shannon (“Saturday Night Live”), Bradley Whitford (“The West Wing”)

Director: Chris Kelly (best known as “SNL” and “Broad City” writer)

Synopsis: After David (Plemons) breaks up with his partner, he returns home to Sacramento to care for his terminally ill mother (Shannon). He also has the rest of his family to deal with, including his father, who still refuses to accept David’s sexuality.

Release: This blend of comedy and tear-jerking drama premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Its wide release: Sept. 9, 2016. 

Title: “Mamaboy”

Filming location: El Dorado and Placer counties

Starring: Sean O’Donnell, Alexandria DeBerry, Gary Busey (“Point Break”)

Director: Aaron Leong (currently lives in Natomas)

Synopsis: When Lisa (DeBerry) discovers that she’s pregnant, her boyfriend, Kelly (O’Donnell), wants to keep her out of trouble with her strict father. Kelly finds a way to transfer the baby . . . into himself, and quirky antics ensue.

Title: “Lady Bird”

Starring: Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”) 

Director: Greta Gerwig (born and raised in Sacramento)

Synopsis: This film will be the directorial debut of Gerwig, previously seen in “Frances Ha” and “Mistress America.” It centers on a high school senior (Ronan) spending her final year in Sacramento.
