Mango Madness

Walking into Sweets and Sugars can be a dizzying experience. This neveria, or ice cream parlor, across the street from C.K. McClatchy High School in Land Park, is nearly always swarming with a line of customers, and the lengthy menu of ice creams, raspados (Mexican shaved ice), aguas frescas, cakes and other desserts can be a tad overwhelming. But the most important thing to know about is their mangoneadas: scoops of Gunther’s mango freeze layered with chunks of fresh mango, then drenched in chamoy (a deep-red sauce made from pickled fruit), dusted with chili powder and eaten with a straw wrapped in tamarind candy. It’s sweet and spicy and salty and sour all at once, a virtual assault on the senses—but in a good way. 3051 Freeport Blvd.; (916) 447-5050
