A high-design, mixed-use development celebrates midtown’s diverse, discerning demographic through art.

  • Neighborhood: Midtown Sacramento
  • Stats: Four stories, 68 residential units and 2,000 square feet of retail
  • Interior Designer: Victoria Tanforan, Pacific Design Group

Gone are the days when amenities and accessibility alone could lure a midtown dweller to a new apartment building. Today, that cultured and creative crowd craves a point of view and a sense of place. Q19 brings these in many ways, most noticeably—and uniquely—through art.

Developers SKK Developments and The Grupe Company appointed artist Kyle Lawson to create original pieces displayed throughout the building. Framed in stainless steel to play off the building’s raw finishes, the layered paintings symbolize the area’s diversity. Artist Tyson Anthony Roberts was also commissioned to bring the gym and bike storage room to life with two vibrant murals that draw inspiration from the surrounding neighborhood.

Artist Kyle Lawson created pieces to fit specific areas and complement the color tones of the building. Here in the lobby, it syncs stylishly with the modular sofa designed by Tanforan.

“Developers usually don’t want to spend money on real art,” says Victoria Tanforan, who designed the building’s model unit and common areas. “It’s usually pretty generic. The fact that they wanted to support local arts and tell a story about the neighborhood is really special.” For the model unit, Tanforan had the opportunity to sort through SKK founder Sotiris Kolokotronis’ personal art collection, from which she selected two large-scale pieces that reflect midtown’s vibrancy and attitude. “Midtown is maturing,” she says, “so I wanted to give the space a funky personality and some soul that you don’t typically see in a rental unit.”
