On the theory that everyone’s a critic, we asked you, our readers, to try your hand at writing a restaurant review. Reader Bob Garcia responded with this review of Mexquite Mexican Restaurant in Folsom.
If a dress rehearsal foretells the future, then Mexquite may soon walk away with a Tony Award. Not that there weren’t any wrinkles in the tortilla, but overall, dining was a very good experience at Mexquite.
Mexquite is located in a new, stand-alone building and is decorated in Mexi-Nouveau style: trendy yet traditional. We did think it a little strange that the Tequila Lounge (aka the bar) is nearly part of the reception/waiting area; it’s an awkward place to enjoy a beverage with all that commotion associated with an entryway. But we really were there for the food, anyhow.
The service was a little spotty but adequate&emdash;surely a work in progress. Chips and roasted-chili salsa were nothing unique, and the tortilla soup, while good, was certainly not distinctive.
It was in the final act&emdash;the entres&emdash;where Mexquite stole the show.
I enjoyed the taqueria-style carnitas burrito. It was very large; the balance of ingredients&emdash;pork, rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream and cheese&emdash;was right: The burrito did not float in guacamole or sour cream, and there was enough rice, beans and meat to make it enjoyable. My wife’s cheese enchilada and carnitas taco combination plate was on par with the authentic places we have eaten.
Best of all was our bill: It was a great value. We look forward to enjoying the Mexquite playbill again soon.
