Just in time to welcome in the Second Saturday crowds, Sugar Plum Vegan Cafe opens its doors at 2315 K St. tomorrow. The casual midtown cafe promises a 100 percent vegan menu of healthful comfort foods—think panini, pizza and pot pie plus sandwiches, soups and salads—made from mostly local and organic ingredients, along with specials showcasing what’s in season. There’ll be fair-trade coffees, teas and smoothies, and owners Khy’em Amri and Melissa Wilhelm’s signature Sugar Plum Vegan baked goods (currently sold at the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op and select Whole Foods). Open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., the cafe will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a weekend brunch buffet on the horizon. We suspect Sugar Plum will quickly become a hub not just for midtown hipsters—the free Wi-Fi, art displays, and poetry and music sessions on the back patio won’t hurt—but a destination among folks willing to drive serious miles to consume good vegan grub.
