After a months-long shutdown due to the coronavirus, Real Pie Company has reopened with new hours and a new business model.

The popular pie shop, owned by Kira O’Donnell Babich and Fred Babich, is now open for takeout three days a week, Friday through Sunday.

The Babiches opened Real Pie Company on 24th Street near Broadway in 2018. O’Donnell Babich, who had earlier run a pie shop in midtown and later kept in touch with her customers through emails and newsletters, already had a rabid fan base for her pies, made with all-butter crusts, seasonal fruits and locally sourced ingredients.

When the pandemic brought indoor dining to a halt back in March, the couple closed the shop entirely. However, they held occasional “bake sales,” allowing customers to place orders for fresh and frozen whole pies for pickup.

The store will now be open for takeout 11 a.m.–6:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Sunday. Customers will also be able to preorder pies for pickup on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

This month’s offerings include jumbleberry, cherry, peach/nectarine, wild blueberry, rhubarb-raspberry, lemon meringue, Key lime, chocolate cream, butterscotch banana cream, and coconut cream pie, along with wild wildflower honey pie topped with tangy Greek yogurt, three-plum pie with toasted almond and coconut streusel and apple galette. Savory offerings include chicken pot pie, shepherd’s pie, kale/sausage/feta hand pie, broccoli/cheddar hand pie, meatball hand pie and vegetable quiche.

Like many restaurants, Real Pie Company had to pivot during the pandemic in order to survive. The company recently began selling its pies at the Davis Farmers Market and Nugget Market in West Sacramento.

Real Pie Company is at 2425 24th St. For more information, go to www.realpiecompany.com.
