Canon restaurant in East Sac will be giving away vegetable starter plants and seed packets this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The giveaway will include heirloom tomato, cucumber, watermelon and corn starts, and packets of seeds to grow radishes, cucumbers, melons, artichokes, onions, basil and other herbs.
Back in January, chef/owner Brad Cecchi ordered hundreds of “cool seeds” to grow on the restaurant’s patio garden. He planned to give many of the plants away at the restaurant’s annual patio-opening party in early May. When the coronavirus shutdown occurred and the party was called off, Cecchi and his mom (who helps tend the garden) decided to plant the seeds anyway and give the starts away. “We’ve already given starters to our staff and friends, and we still have hundreds and hundreds left,” Cecchi explains. “We thought it might be helpful to the community to offer these up. A lot of people are planting summer gardens, because they have the time right now.”
The restaurant is offering curbside delivery of the free plants and seeds. Call the restaurant at (916) 469-2433 and they will deliver to your car. Canon is at 1719 34th St.
