The Sawyer Hotel has come up with a unique way to serve diners outdoors during the pandemic: igloos. Earlier this month, the hotel established a pop-up restaurant on the second-floor deck, called Revival on the Terrace. There, diners can reserve one of five pods made of clear plastic sheeting over a geodesic plastic frame for two hours of eating and drinking.
The igloos are furnished with plush sofas and armchairs from the party rentals firm Celebrations! They are ventilated for air flow, with a zipper down the front to enclose the pod and keep the users warm and dry. Each igloo has a wireless speaker so that users can play music from their phones. The igloos are sanitized after each use.
The igloos seat up to six people and are available by reservation only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, with two seatings, at 5 and 8 p.m. There’s a $50-per-person minimum. You place and pay for your order at time of reservation. The menu features wine, craft cocktails and sharable appetizers, priced by the piece, such as crispy duck wings, deviled eggs and oysters on the half shell.
Reservations for the month of February sold out almost immediately. March reservations should be available soon. Depending on the weather, the Sawyer may continue using the igloos into April as well. During the pandemic, structures similar to The Sawyer’s igloos have appeared in New York and Chicago.
