For those living in Sacramento but caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s very easy to forget that there are hidden treasures all around us, and a weekend of fun doesn’t mean making the trek all the way to Tahoe or the coast. Just minutes outside the city lies the river delta region, which is dotted with wineries, farms, and historic landmarks.
Now in its third year, the Wine and Produce Passport Weekend gives Sacramentans a reason to explore this charming, unsung part of the valley. On the second weekend in August, visitors can take tours of the farms and wineries along Highway 160, check out the wildlife and landscapes, play games and activities, and enjoy local produce and wines. The farmers themselves will be out on their properties to greet visitors and show off their products. At Steamboat Acres, for instance, visitors can browse the pears, apples, sweet corn, and honey available for purchase before taking a hay wagon farm tour through the pear and cherry orchards, vineyard, alfalfa fields and farm equipment. At Delta Islands Organic Farms, each visitor will be gifted 2 pounds of heirloom tomatoes and can try a tomato tasting while kids can participate in a “Draw the Best Tomato” contest. After that, visitors can hope over to Bogle Vineyards for a complimentary wine tasting and free Bogle tasting glass. In total, 17 farms and wineries are opening their doors to visitors, with each spot offering a special freebie to ticketholders. This event is just the thing for families looking for something fun, new, educational, and local.
