Two regional troupes are among the many theater groups that are presenting holiday plays this month: the venerable B Street Theatre and, in the suburbs, the Rocklin Community Theatre.
The family series presentation of “ ’Tis the Season” continues through Dec. 24 at the B Street’s Midtown home, The Sofia (2700 Capitol Ave.).
B Street says that the collection of short stories “captures the excitement of what it’s like to be a kid during the holidays. Whether it’s the true story of how elves became Santa’s helpers, an adventure solving a holiday-style Sherlock Holmes mystery, an exploration of the different winter traditions celebrated around the world, or the discovery of New Years fireworks, ‘’Tis the Season’ is a wonderful celebration of holiday magic!”

Rocklin Community Theatre is staging “Matilda The Musical,” what the performing arts organization calls “a joyous girl power romp,” the next two weekends.
“Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers,” RCT says. “She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other’s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality.
“Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however. The school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!”
Show dates are Dec. 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17 and 18 at Finnish Temperance Hall, 4090 Rocklin Road. Find curtain times online, where you also can buy tickets for $17 to $22.
