The Boondock Saints was released 10 years ago, and even with its poor reviews back then, it has become a cult classic. In honor of its 10-year anniversary-and the release of its sequel, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day—the original movie will be in theaters for a special screening today, March 11, only. Back when it was released, it was in only five theaters for one week, so this may be the only time fans will see it in theaters.
If you haven’t heard of it, the story line is this: The MacManus brothers, Connor and Murphy (played by Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus), are Catholic Irish-American brothers-fraternal twins, to be exact-living in Boston. After they murder a pair of Russian mobsters (in self-defense) and the act is met with citizen approval, they set out to rid their hometown of evil and crime. During this time, they’re pursued by a very dramatic FBI agent, played by Willem Dafoe, and before each murder, they recite their family prayer: “And shepherds we shall be, for Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, our feet may swiftly carry out Thy commands. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomeni Patri et Fili Spiritus Sancti.“
