The other day I was wandering around midtown and decided to pop my head into Sol Collective, an art space and cultural education center tucked away on 21st Street across from the cemetery. I don’t know what exactly I was expecting, but I definitely didn’t anticipate walking into a room full of teens. It basically looked like I had walked into a high school pizza party, but with art. The teens were constructing a huge geodome structure that was dominating the majority of the room. They were all stationed around it, salivating over the pizza delivery and doing assorted artistic things. What had I walked into? A young woman told me they were prepping for Teen Takeover at the Crocker Museum. Their geodome, the centerpiece of the exhibit, will be built, filled with their words and art, taken apart at Sol Collective, and then reconstructed at the Crocker on April 17th as part of Teen Takeover. “Please come see what teens can do,” she said, handing me flier.
Sol Collective is teaming up with the Crocker Art Museum to put on a one-night-only Spring Break exhibit. Their geodome is only one part of this art jam. Teens from the community are bringing live bands, DJs, parkour demos, an open mic show, a hip hop slam dance, interactive art making, silk screening, and a live art battle to the Crocker. The teens are also putting on a fashion show, a digital photography exhibit, and a high school portrait series. Adults seeking refuge from the bombardment of hormones can escape to the Adult Room where they can watch cooking demos, get a chair massage, or try their hands at art projects of their own.
It’s obvious these teens have a lot to say and a lot to show for themselves. Now’s the chance to support Sacramento’s burgeoning next generation of artists. For more information, see here.
