The names Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller may not ring a bell for everyone, but they should: This was the songwriting team that penned some of the most irresistible tunes from rock’s early years, from “Jailhouse Rock” to “Love Potion No. 9” and “Kansas City.” While it’s always fun to hear these songs on the radio or your iPod, there’s nothing as exciting as hearing them performed live, especially by some of the original artists—and that’s exactly what’s happening at the Harris Center, where the Coasters (“Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Brown”) will be headlining the national touring production of “Smokey Joe’s Café” on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 2 and 3. This Grammy-winning show, directed and choreographed by Chet Walker, offers a vibrant hit parade of Leiber and Stoller classics—and an upbeat way to kick off the new year.
