I’ve been a vegetarian for three years now (with one major lapse, but let’s not talk about that) and out of all the questions I’ve had lobbed at me by my omnivorous brethren, the one I hear the most is, “But how can you live without bacon?” I don’t know, folks, I guess I’m a freak of nature!
While life goes on without bacon in my world, for certain Sacramentans, bacon is the air they breathe. Several years back, these baconphiles started up our city’s first Bacon Fest, and it’s back once again this month. The week of Jan. 19 through 26 is going to turn Sacramento into one greasy, delicious pig-out session. A different restaurant will hold a swine-themed event each day of the festival, beginning with the opening night party at Grange and ending with the Bacon Fest Chef’s Competition at Mulvaney’s Pig on the Corner. Sandwiched between those events are special prix-fixe dinners at Formoli’s Bistro and Magpie Cafe, while Bacon & Butter and The Golden Bear will be slinging breakfast and brunch. Even the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op will be getting in on the action with two bacon-cooking classes. Bacon lovers should also be sure to check out all the bacon cocktails making their appearances at participating restaurants and bars—bacon fat margarita, anyone?
Bacon Fest has been extremely popular in the past, so the festival organizers encourage everyone to make reservations well in advance. For more information, see here.
