Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, incredibly, it’s the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera, performing a supersized sampling of superhero-movie soundtracks Saturday at the SAFE.

(Say that three times as fast as you can.)

Tickets are $30–$70 for the “Superhero Soundtrack Spectacular,” which begins at 8 p.m. at the SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center, 1301 L St.

Here’s how the orchestra plugs the show:

“Hear . . . mesmerizing music from Marvel, Superman, Spiderman and all your favorite Superhero classics. With returning maestro and master of ceremonies Stuart Chafetz, delight in some of the most memorable themes from ‘The Avengers,’ ‘Batman,’ ‘Wonder Woman,’ ‘Man of Steel,’ ‘The Incredibles,’ ‘Supergirl’ and ‘X-Men: The Last Stand.’ . . .

“Come dressed as your favorite superhero (or villain) for a concert experience that will take you up, up, up and away!”

Chafetz, who lives near San Francisco, is affiliated with the Columbus (Ohio), Chautauqua (New York) and Marin symphonies and has been Sac Phil’s conductor throughout the 2021-22 season.

The musical organization’s 2022-23 season has seven performances, the first of which being Oct. 22 and featuring works by Igor Stravinsky (most notably “The Firebird”), Wynton Marsalis and John Wineglass. Learn more on the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera’s website.
