My first exposure to Robert Irvine was seeing Paula Deen lick butter off his sculpted abs. I wish this wasn’t true, but it is, and nothing can erase the memory. (Check YouTube for the footage if you dare.) Most people know Irvine from his popular Food Channel television show, “Restaurant Impossible,” on which he sternly but lovingly helps failing restaurateurs turn their crummy Tex-Mex joints into fabulous eateries. He’s like Gordon Ramsey, but way less of a jerk. Prior to his network debut, Irvine had been working as a chef in restaurants around the world. He’s tough, he’s funny, and based on what I can glean from TV, he’s a very talented chef. If you’re interested in getting some insight into both the restaurant and the television businesses, or if you’re just interested in ogling at him and his rippling abs, you can see him live at the Crest Theatre this month. This isn’t your typical celebrity lecture, but more like a live cooking show. Irvine will dish up some of his favorite meals, offer tips and tricks to cooking, and give the audience the kind of interaction you could never get from behind a television screen.
