For the last 50 years, the Sacramento Banjo Band has been putting on an event unlike any other in the region, the Banjo-Rama. Paying tribute to and featuring the world’s finest players of the four-string banjo, this annual event is a must see for any lover of, or player of, the world’s happiest instrument. As a player myself, I can say that this weekend will probably be slap-happiest weekend of my year.
But what about the non-banjo enthusiast? What’s in it for you? Plenty.
This year’s 50th anniversary event is a total banjo blowout. Expanding the usual one-day event to a four-day festival, and moving from the humble Carmichael Elks Lodge to the newly renovated Red Lion Hotel, this year promises to be something special. Players from all over the country will be descending on Sacramento to show off their fancy fingers and flawless fretwork. Designers and instrument makers will be showing off their wares, from custom-made ukuleles to the finest beaded parasols. And, if you drop by on Friday afternoon, you might just see a certain unnamed blogger try his hand at breaking into the banjo big time.
