If you know any Greek mythology—and even if you don’t—you might know that the Greek god Apollo was instructed in the classical arts by three Muses before he took his place in the pantheon on Mt. Olympus. The Sacramento Ballet celebrates this iconic artistic process with George Balanchine’s (aptly named) ballet “Apollo” as well as with pieces from a new pantheon of California choreographers—Molly Lynch, KT Nelson and Melissa Barak—on May 15–17 at Harris Center for the Performing Arts.
Balanchine’s ballet has been considered a masterpiece for the ages ever since its debut in 1928—and it has inspired new, modern masterworks by three current choreographers. It’s a program that’s at once classical and cutting edge.
