There’s a bit of spooky synchronicity here: It was 1964 when the Disney film version of “Mary Poppins” was released—and Music Circus, now in its 64th season, is finally staging the classic musical for the first time. Coincidence? Probably. But still, a fun fact.
The ever-so-charming story of a magical nanny who descends upon a dysfunctional family in London, “Mary Poppins” is chock-full of memorable tunes (“Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” and more) and is fanciful from start to finish, captivating kids as well as adults. But how will they pull off the umbrella scene? Even Richard Lewis, California Musical Theatre president and CEO, is puzzling over that one. As he told Sacramento magazine in a recent interview, “I’m looking forward to seeing how our creative team does it.”
Go find out for yourself by catching the show, but don’t procrastinate: It runs only through Sunday, July 13. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit californiamusicaltheatre.com.
