With the constant noise surrounding the Kings, it’s easy to overlook the other sports teams in town. And reflecting on the popularity of the basically forgotten Monarchs (may they rest in peace), it’s no surprise that one of our all-female leagues, despite being the definition of sporty-cool, gets little attention. The Sac City Rollers, our roller derby league, is gearing up for the next local bout on Saturday, Aug. 10. These bad, bad babes sport tattoos, fishnets, tiny shorts and a whole lot of attitude. I thought about trying to join one of their roller derby teams—girl power!—until I realized that yes, you have to be tough and yes, I would end up very bruised and battered. Roller derby is definitely not for everyone, and that’s all the more reason to head over to The Rink and watch these brave ladies throw down. But don’t get the wrong idea—the rollers are kind-hearted, too. A portion of their raffle proceeds go to charity, with this month’s lucky recipient being the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library. So no need to feel embarrassed about watching hot chicks on skates beat up on each other. You’re just there to better our community. For more information, click here.
