If your memories of Music Circus involve lots of long dresses and even longer love ballads from musicals of yore, get ready for something with a little more je ne sais quoi. “La Cage aux Folles”—the raunchy comedy with a heart of gold—shimmies its way into the Wells Fargo Pavilion on Aug. 19 through 24.
The sweet and saucy show, based on the French play of the same name by Jean Poiret, chronicles the hilarious hijinks of a nightclub owner and his drag-queen partner when their son brings home his fiancee’s ultra-conservative parents to meet them. The bawdy farce won its creators, Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman, six Tony Awards the year it premiered and one each year it was revived on Broadway (2004 and 2010)—the only musical to have done so. So throw on a boa and grab your tickets to the most fun you’ll have all summer.
