Kwanzaa Celebration

Are you familiar with Kwanzaa? Kwanzaa is a seven-day celebration based on African festivals that runs Dec. 26–Jan. 1. For the December issue of Sacramento magazine, I interviewed a local woman who celebrates Kwanzaa by inviting friends and family over and serving a stew using the egusi seed, a spice common Nigeria and Ghana. Gerri Scott says she serves the dish because it is representative of the African culture. (It’s also very popular among her guests!) Read the article here.
OK, I can’t get you an invitation to Gerri Scott’s Kwanzaa celebration, but you can celebrate the holiday at the Sojourner Truth Multicultural Museum on Dec. 31 from 4 to 7 p.m. The museum is located at 2251 Florin Road, Suite 126, in Sacramento. Learn more about Kwanzaa here.
