The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a musically complex, funky, impressive band. They’re ultra-creative, they’re modern, and they bend traditional jazz forms. Forget pushing the envelope—Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey puts the envelope through the shredder. The last time I saw them, several years ago, they were opening for guitar stud Charlie Hunter at Harlow’s. Since then they’ve toured the world, and nabbed rave reviews doing it, from media giants like the New York Times and SF Chronicle. Thursday night they’ll be playing at the intimate Beatnik Studios on 17th and Broadway. If you’ve got a hankering for modern, improvisational music, JFJO is for you.
