As part of their Jazz in the Courtyard series, the Crocker Art Museum is presenting a special evening with nationally renowned jazz musician Marcus Shelby. The award-winning composer, arranger, bassist and educator has prepared a two-hour live performance inspired by the history of African American music and art. From the time of slavery to the Harlem Renaissance to the civil rights movement to the present, African Americans have contributed to American musical culture in such rich and profound ways that it’s impossible to imagine the musical landscape without their influence. And it’s an influence very worth celebrating. Guests at this Jazz in the Courtyard performance can enjoy food from the Crocker Cafe, run by Matteo’s and the Supper Club’s Matt Woolston, or a special picnic basket provided by the Crocker (guests should order the picnic 24 hours ahead).
