I caught Jake Shimabukuro’s astounding performance last year at the Crest, and—lucky for us—he’s back to do it again on Saturday, Oct. 25. The 37-year-old Hawaiian-born ukulele virtuoso, whose career exploded when his riveting rendition of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” went viral on YouTube eight years ago, has since become an international superstar for his phenomenally fast fingerings, artistic inventiveness and nice-guy likeability. But don’t take my word for it: According to Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder, “Jake is taking the instrument to a place that I can’t see anybody else catching up with.” And it’s probably no coincidence that the ukulele craze took off right around the time that Shimabukuro’s career spun into orbit, either.
