‘Giselle in 3D’

I just purchased my tickets to Giselle in 3D, the world’s first ballet film to be shown in 3D. It plays at five Sacramento-area theaters on July 12 at noon and 7:30 p.m., and I can hardly wait until then.

Danced by the Mariinsky Ballet (formerly the Kirov) at the historic Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, the classical ballet stars Natalia Osipova as Giselle and Leonid Sarafanov as Prince Albrecht.

Giselle is the story of a village girl who falls in love with a prince, but heartbreak ensues. In the second act, Giselle finds herself among the Wilis, a group of beautiful but vengeful female spirits, who, like her, died before their wedding day. The Wilis intend to lure the prince into a fatal dance. The purity of Giselle’s love for him causes her to intervene.

After pre-screenings in London, word was that the cinematography was a bit uneven because dance proved to be a difficult genre to shoot in 3D, although Giselle in 3D is more than worth seeing for Osipova’s breathtaking performance alone.

Giselle in 3D plays at Natomas Marketplace, Roseville 14, Sacramento Stadium 14, Sacramento Downtown Plaza 7 and Sacramento Greenback Lane 16. Get your tickets at one of those theaters or at FathomEvents.com.
