With Farm to Fork week coming up, there’s a plethora of parties, classes and events to attend. The big name event is, of course, the Tower Bridge dinner, but with tickets having sold out only a few hours after going on sale, you’d have to hit up foodie scalpers if you wanted a seat over the river. Luckily, that isn’t the only meal being offered in town that will give you an all-new perspective on an old part of Sacramento. For the fourth year in a row, Sutter’s Fort in midtown is hosting a four-course, sit-down dinner within the walls of the state historical park.
Before dinner, guests are treated to live music, appetizers, wine, beer, cider and the chance to watch and speak to the chefs preparing the dinner. Some of Sacramento’s best chefs will be cooking, including talent from Cafe Vinoteca, Hock Farm Craft & Provisions, Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co., Mulvaney’s B&L and Ten22 Restaurant. Their food will be served family style and paired with local beers and wines. Because the chefs come from divergent backgrounds in terms of cooking styles, the uniting theme this year will be “cooking with chocolate,” a nod to the Mexican chocolate John Sutter imported to his fort nearly two centuries ago.
Sutter’s Fort is itself a beautiful landmark and is enjoyable to amble around during the day. Sure, adding exquisitely cooked food, a glass of wine, and a live band to the scene is not entirely historically accurate (you’ll almost certainly be eating far better than anyone did there when the fort was active as a trade colony), but I think that’s excusable considering how much fun you’ll be having.
