Exercise for a Cause on Thanksgiving Day

The season of (over) eating commences this week. Well, maybe it started at Halloween for some of us, but it’s in full swing now. Make some room for that extra slice of pumpkin pie by logging in a few miles. Two turkey-themed runs are taking place Thanksgiving morning.
Over in East Sacramento, there is the 18th annual Run To Feed the Hungry. This race seems to get more and more popular every year and the RTFTH folks are expecting some 27,000 people at this year’s event. The 5K run/walk and 10K run both start near the entrance to Sacramento State on J Street and wind through East Sacramento. The 10K takes you into midtown, but both courses share the same finish line near the Scottish Rite Center on H Street. This is a fun event; you’ll feel a huge sense of community doing it. But plan ahead and get to the race early!
The 5th annual Folsom Turkey Trot—also a 5K run/walk and 10K run— starts on North Parkway Drive in Folsom, then takes participants on the bike trails through the Parkway community. The event is a nice option for Folsom/El Dorado Hills residents and for those who might want to say “Happy Thanksgiving,” to about 23,000 fewer people. The race is capped at 4,000 entries, which brings me to my caveat: The race may be sold out by the time you read this. Check the website. Unlike RTFTH, there is no race-day registration.
While it’s great to get out and get some exercise on Thanksgiving morning to assuage your guilt for eating too much, keep in mind the mission behind both of these events: to help people in need. Donations, however small, are welcome. Money from RTFTH goes to Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. Tents will be set up on race day (look for the 22-foot inflatable turkey) or you can text the word SACFOOD to 20222.  Money for the Folsom Turkey Trot goes to the Twin Lakes Food Bank. You may send checks made out to the food bank to Capitol Adventure, 103 Yost Court, Folsom, CA  95630. Or, bring donations of food, winter clothes and blankets when you pick up your race packet.
