My pal Johnny Carrero does some great things. He helps people get in shape through his work as a personal trainer, advising them on diet as well as exercise. He also puts on a large drug-free athletic competition that he hopes shows people, especially kids, that you don’t have to take drugs to attain muscles worthy of pictures in magazines. This year’s Drug-Free Mr./Ms. California Extravaganza takes place Saturday, June 8 at Folsom Middle School. Local and national athletes will compete for the titles of NGA Natural Mr./Ms. California Bodybuilding Championship, NGA Natural Ms. California Figure, NGA Natural Ms. Bikini California, NGA Natural Ms. Physique California and the NGA Natural Mr. Physique California. The event is a professional qualifier, which means that those who win this competition will be eligible to compete in pro shows and win money instead of trophies. (Though we are sure the trophies are much appreciated.) Pre-judging begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until about noon; tickets are $15. The evening finals—where each competitor does choreographed posing routines—begins at 6 p.m. and tickets are $20 regular and $25 if you want to sit in the first 10 rows. Proceeds from the event benefit educational programs that teach youth about the harmful side effects of anabolic steroids.
