I have some friends who live in Connecticut. They are both originally from Sacramento, so many years they come out here for Christmas to visit family. For the past five years or so we’ve talked about going to see the Christmas lights at Dovewood Court. Joe and Linda haven’t lived here for 30 years, so they have never heard of the wonder that is Christmas at Dovewood Court.
Joe was out for a visit a couple of weeks ago, so he and I, along with Joe’s sister-in-law and mother-in-law, who both live locally, took a trip to the court.
I was a little concerned that perhaps I’d built up Dovewood Court too much. There are many great places to see Christmas lights in this town and Joe and company have seen many of them. Plus, Joe and Linda live so close to New York City, that making trips there at Christmastime is almost a given.
Happily, all three of them were impressed with the Orangevale cul-de-sac’s Christmas spirit. Every house had lights; most were decorated to the nines. We went to “Margaritaville,” visited a Christmas Story, saw Santa and his reindeer on top of one rooftop (and, miraculously, it was snowing!), peeked into Santa’s toyshop and more. And if you want to be around a festive, holiday-loving crowd, this is the place to be. Couples, teens, families with young children—all were out touring the court. Many of the homeowners were outside greeting guests; there also were some greeters of the canine variety. Touring the lights is free; all the homeowners ask is that you bring a canned food donation for Food For Families.
You can drive through Dovewood Court, but my recommendation if you are up to it is to park nearby and walk. The closer it gets to Christmas, the more crowded it will get with cars. However, whether you walk or drive, you’ll be glad you made the trip. Click here for directions.
Linda, if you are reading this, we need to visit Dovewood Court the next time you visit in December!
